The Albanese Labor Government is delivering Victoria the infrastructure it deserves, with three further projects announced under the $1.2 billion Road Blitz to upgrade roads, reduce congestion and improve safety in Melbourne’s growing suburbs.
Melbourne’s outer suburbs are some of the fastest-growing in Australia. These crucial projects will help commuters get home sooner and safer, so they are spending less time on the road and more time with their families.
In partnership with the Allan Labor Government, three projects will share in over $260 million to fix some of Melbourne’s most notorious roads, including:
- $250 million for Stage 2 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade
- $10 million for planning and development work to upgrade the Western Port Highway
- $3 million to plan transport network upgrades in and around Drouin and Warragul.
To the east of Melbourne, $3 million will go towards planning for transport network upgrades in and around Drouin and Warragul. This planning work will identify opportunities for future investments to improve travel times and road safety that will service this growing urban area. SEATS has supported Baw Baw Shire Council in its endeavours to undertake this essential work and this project was amongst the SEATS of priority projects circulated to all Federal election Candidates in March this year.
This essential transport infrastructure planning within Baw Baw Shire is important to this peri-urban area under the Victorian Government’s Metropolitan Planning Strategy “Plan Melbourne 2017-2050”. SEATS asked that $3m be allocated towards the planning and development tasks to ensure future options are not built out with incremental development.
Also listed in the SEATS Federal Election Transport Infrastructure Requirements for Victoria was a request to ensure that compliant road access into Port Hastings to enable effective use of this regional port adjacent to Gippsland and critical for the development of the off-shore renewable energy developments. The funding announcement included investing $10 million towards planning and development work to upgrade the Western Port Highway to deliver a safer commute for more than 10,000 drivers who travel along this road every day.
